Hitler misses Hoary Redpoll

OK, OK, this is in terrible bad taste. But it is hilarious.
And a good reminder of where our list mania takes us some times...

National Squirrel Appreciation Day!

WHAT?? National Squirrel Appreciation Day is today? That's what it says here.  I am supposed to appreciate these annoying little mammals that chew through my bird feeders and polish off expensive bird feed? Let me go get my B-B Gun and...

No, no, no, they are God's creatures, too. And it is kind of fun to watch them run up and down trees in spiral fashion, like colors on an old-fashioned barber's pole.

Squirrel Appreciation Day was founded in 2001 by Christy Hargrove, according to the Huffington Post story linked above. We are supposed to celebrate the day by appreciating and feeding our furry friends - note to self: put peanuts in peanut feeder. Squirrels like that - and by learning more about them.

I learned two things:

_ There are more than 300 squirrel species in the world.

_ They have the power to control the planet, since thier chewing, or so the story goes, twice shut down stock trading on the NASDAQ market and once cut power to thousands of Virginians.

And of course Maryland is home to the endangered and beautiful Delmarva Fox Squirrel.

At least for today, I will leave the B-B gun in the corner. They are kinda cute, after all...

What a Difference a Year Makes...

As many of you know, Warren worked on and completed (with a bang!) a Maryland Big Year in 2012.  Every potential bird that was not on his year list was an instant must search for and hopefully tick bird.  It was fabulous fun birding which took us all over the state and sometimes criss-crossing it all in one day.

So, what happens in 2013?  Old school BirdCouple birding!  This weekend we took a leisurely drive over to   the Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center , a place we used to bird in the early days of BC.  We strolled around the whole lake and checked out the rehab owls and hawks.   We saw no rare ducks.  We saw no out of the ordinary birds at all.

We rejoiced in the Mallards, Northern Shovelers and Yellow- Rumped Warblers.   We celebrated each bird without feeling like we needed to run to the next birding spot in search of something new.   And, this too was fabulous fun birding.

A little more relaxed and just a tad more romantic.  I could take a year of this!

Better news for the Chesapeake Bay - at least a bit

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation's annual "State of the Bay" report has some modest good news for our beloved estuary.

On a scale of 100, the report rates the Bay's health at 32. That may not sound like much, but it's a 1 point increase from last year, and a 10 percent improvement since 2008. The report rates the health of the Bay using a number of metrics, including dissolved oxygen (which is good), the presence of underwater grasses, the prevalence of phosphorous and other pollutants; and of course the health of our treasured blue crabs, oysters and rockfish.

Is this a turning point for the Bay? We hope so. That would be good news for us, and for creatures like this gorgeous Swamp Sparrow.

Save the Bay!
